Alumni Class Notes for December 2017
Alma Ramos-McDermott (’84) is thrilled to announce that she has been selected as a member of the Newbery Committee.
Alma Ramos-McDermott (’84) spent 21 years as an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y. before she married and moved to Boston in 2005. There she returned to graduate school for her second master’s degree, this one in Library Science, and spent 5 years as a school librarian in both middle and high schools. Alma relocated to Naples, Fla. in 2013, and spent a year teaching technology, a year as a substitute teacher, and a year as the Schools Coordinator for the Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida, a health and wellness initiative. She is now in her second year as an elementary school librarian in Immokalee, Fla. Alma is thrilled to announce that she has been selected as a member of the Newbery Committee. The Newbery Award, established in 1922 by the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the American Library Association), is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Kathy Anderson (’63) writes, “I recently started the Fundacion Apoyo Para El Embarazo in Santiago, Chile with another American, modeled after the pregnancy help centers where we had worked in the U.S. We were just legalized and held a fundraising cafe concert, which was a big success. We are working to lease furnished office space in a non-profit related to a church. Chile just passed its first law to legalize abortion in cases of rape, life of the mother, and inviable fetus. Please pray for us as we move forward to launch early next year. I will be visiting the US most of December, mostly at my address in Atlanta and several days in New York City.” You can connect with Kathy by writing to alumni@tkc.edu.
